The Healthy Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy for the Pain of Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Research supported by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) showed that sixty minute sessions of Swedish massage once a week for those with osteoarthritis of the knee significantly reduced their pain.

Massage Therapy For inflammation after Exercise

Research through the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario indicates that massage therapy reduces inflammation of skeletal muscle acutely damaged through exercise. The study provides evidence for the benefits of massage therapy for those with musculoskeletal injuries and potentially for those with inflammatory disease, according to the lead author of the research.

Massage Therapy for Chronic Low Back Pain

Research released in July 2011 expanded on previous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of massage therapy for chronic low back pain. Researchers found that “patients receiving massage were twice as likely as those receiving usual care to report significant improvements in both their pain and function”.

Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome characterized by generalized pain, joint rigidity, intense fatigue, sleep alterations, headache, spastic colon, craniomandibular dysfunction, anxiety, and depression. This study demonstrated that massage-myofascial release techniques improved pain and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia.

Testimonies

"Apparently my age and physical activity had finally caught up with me. [...] I had an X-ray and knew I was dealing with arthritis (little gremlins) in the hip joint. Lisa has great knowledge of Yoga and specifically in my case, myofascial poses - focusing on tissue/muscles impacted by my hip arthritis. We had a private lesson. Then she prepared a detailed plan that I am able to do on my own to facilitate the blood flow and energy to my hip. I can literally FEEL the warmth flowing into the targeted areas. While this alone may not "cure " me, it does strengthen, works on flexibility, and relieves the stress/tension/ pain I feel. So if I eventually have to deal with surgery- I will have done the prework to keep blood, energy, and strength flowing to my hip. In the meantime I am able to keep on moving!" - MB

"I am a breast cancer survivor and have had numerous lymphatic massages between Montana and Arizona. Hands down, Lisa is the most knowledgeable, most experienced and has that healing vibe about her. Not everyone who provides "lymphatic massage" knows what they're doing. She's the best I've found and Phillipsburg is lucky to have her." - Esther
